Reader Question:

Confirm Contrast Agents in MRI

Question: Our physician does MRI of the sacrum and pelvis on the same date of service for a patient. What are the right codes for these MRI procedures when done with and without contrast agents?

North Carolina Subscriber

Answer: You may just report the MRI of the pelvis. An MRI of the pelvis will enable study of the sacrum. So you needn’t report any other additional code for the MRI of the sacrum.

Depending upon the use of contrast material and sequences obtained, you can report the following codes:

72195, Magnetic resonance (e.g., proton) imaging, pelvis; without contrast material(s)

72196, Magnetic resonance (e.g., proton) imaging, pelvis; with contrast material(s)

72197, Magnetic resonance (e.g., proton) imaging, pelvis; without contrast material(s), followed by contrast material(s) and further sequences.
