Code Clean Hysterosalpingograms Using Indication Diagnoses
Question: I’m working on a hysterosalpingogram with an indicating diagnosis of infertility. However, the study came back normal. Should I still code this using the indication? California Subscriber Answer: This sort of dilemma is not uncommon amongst coders who regularly code hysterosalpingograms. Despite the fact that the study result does not indicate infertility, you should still report code N97.9 (Female infertility, unspecified) based on the indication. However, if you have access to the order, make sure that all secondary diagnoses were included in the indication. If the order form references additional conditions or symptoms such as endometriosis or irregular menses, then you should send the report back to the physician for an addendum.
