Check Views and Laterality for Rib X-rays

Question: Our physician did an interpretation of rib X-rays. How can we report for these services?

Answer: You should first check the documentation to confirm details about the rib X-rays. Check the number of views obtained and if the imaging was done on one or both sides. Accordingly, you choose from the following four different CPT® codes for rib X-rays:

  • 71100 -- Radiologic examination, ribs, unilateral; 2 views
  • 71101 -- ... including posteroanterior chest, minimum of 3 views
  • 71110 -- Radiologic examination, ribs, bilateral; 3 views
  • 71111 -- ... including posteroanterior chest, minimum of 4 views.

For example, if documentation shows the patient had a unilateral two-view rib X-ray, on the claim you may submit code 71100 for the X-ray of ribs. In addition, you append modifier 26 (Professional component) to 71100 to show that you are only coding for the physician’s interpretation of the X-ray.
