Reader Question:

72069 Requires Standing View

Question: Our order is for a scoliosis series. The report indicates 2 views, but does not specify erect and supine. Both films are AP. What is the best code to use for this exam?

Answer: Assuming the views are of the thoracic and lumbar spine, if the document indicates "standing," then you may code 72069 (Radiologic examination, spine, thoracolumbar, standing [scoliosis]). That code's definition specifies "standing."

If "standing" is not mentioned, then you should report 72080 (Radiologic examination, spine; thoracolumbar, 2 views). This code is correct for two views. Again, you should be sure documentation describes the thoracic and lumbar spinal regions for you to choose this code.
