Reader Question:

70480 Is Best Choice for Noncontrast Temporal Bone CT

Question: Which code is appropriate for a noncontrast temporal bone CT?

Arizona Subscriber

Answer: Code 70480 (Computed tomography, orbit, sella, or posterior fossa or outer, middle, or inner ear; without contrast material) is the appropriate code for this temporal bone study. CPT® Assistant (August 2008) supports this code choice.

Humans have a temporal bone on each side of the skull. The internal structures of the ears are housed in these bones. The Medicare physician fee schedule indicates that you won't be paid any additional money if you report 70480 bilaterally.
