The dens is a projection of the second cervical vertebra, also called the axis. It shows a neck or a constriction where it meets the main vertebral body.
Fractures of the dens are classified into three types:
-
Type I Fracture: This fracture involves the tip of dens. It is a rare fracture. This fracture is considered stable.
-
Type II Fracture: This fracture involves the base of dens. It is most common fracture. This fracture is not stable.
-
Type III Fracture: This fracture extends into the vertebral body of the axis. This may be stable or unstable.
