Crack Down the Codes for Multiple Nasal Polyps

Question: The provider performed removal of multiple nasal polyps. How do we report this?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: The correct code would depend on exact nature of the excision. If the provider performed simple excision of multiple polyps, you may use the CPT® code 30110 (Excision, nasal polyp[s], simple).

If the provider performed extensive excision of the polyps, you will have to resort to 30115 (Excision, nasal polyp[s], extensive). While 30110 would normally be completed in an office setting, 30115 would normally require the facilities available in a hospital setting. If the provider performed the procedure on both the nostrils, you would have to report 30110 with modifier 50 (Bilateral procedure).
