Coding for Ventilator Management in the ED

Question: If a patient is put on a ventilator in the Emergency Department (ED), which CPT® code can we submit?

Answer: Presently, as per the coding guidelines from AARC, there is no such code available to specifically code for use of ventilator in the ED. It is likely that if the patient requires placement on the ventilator, he/she is admitted to observation or (more likely) the inpatient setting, rather than remain a registered ED patient. We do have a CPT® code to cover the patient’s ventilator management for this transitioned scenario: 94002 (Ventilation assist and management, initiation of pressure or volume preset ventilators for assisted or controlled breathing, hospital inpatient/observation, initial day).
