Answer: Per CPT® Assistant, Volume 23, Issue 12, you’ll assign 94640 (Pressurized or nonpressurized inhalation treatment for acute airway obstruction for therapeutic purposes and/or for diagnostic purposes such as sputum induction with an aerosol generator, nebulizer, metered dose inhaler or intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) device) to report the IPV therapy. An IPV uses high-frequency air pulses to help move mucus and assist in improving lung function. The bursts of air move around the trapped mucus to mobilize them, so the airways and lungs can open up. Code 94640 is designated for pneumatic devices that deliver the bursts of air to the lungs for treatment.
