Testing for Pneumonia Antibodies? Read This First

Question: Which diagnosis code would be appropriate for a pneumococcal titer lab test?

New York Subscriber

Answer: Pulmonologists use pneumococcal titers to measure the serum antibody levels in patients after they receive a pneumococcal vaccination. This test determines if the patient has the appropriate serum antibody levels for protection against the disease.

There is now no ICD-9 code that accurately represents this service, but you may want to consider this test as a "prophylactic measure." If this seems appropriate, you should report V07.8 (Other specified prophylactic measure).
