Pulmonology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Watch 95805 Wake Up Your Claims for MWT

Question: Is there another code to use for a maintenance of wake (MOW) test besides 95805?

New Hampshire Subscriber Answer: You are correct in your choice of reporting 95805 (Multiple sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness testing, recording, analysis and interpretation of physiological measurements of sleep during multiple trials to assess sleepiness) when a physician supervises a maintenance of wake test, also referred to as MWT. This test measures daytime sleepiness. Physicians typically perform MWT on the day after polysomnography.

During MWT, the patient undergoes periods of low-demand activity and is then asked to resist sleep during the non-active phases.
