Reader Question:

Using a Modifier for Bronchoscopies? Think Again

Question: When the pulmonologist performs an endoscopic service, such as a transbronchial lung biopsy (31628), but no follow-up care, which modifier should we use?

Florida Subscriber Answer: Actually, you don't need a modifier. Endoscopic procedures, including transbronchial lung biopsy (31628, Bronchoscopy, rigid or flexible, with or without fluoroscopic guidance; with transbronchial lung biopsy[s], single lobe), have no postoperative periods.

Therefore, you should report these services with the appropriate CPT code (31628) to reflect the physician's work.
