Pulmonology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

J Codes Are Your Answer for Combo Inhalation Treatment

Question: One of our pulmonologists gave a combination albuterol/ pulmicort inhalation treatment. I want to know if I can bill only one code or if I have to use two separate HCPCS codes. Wisconsin SubscriberAnswer: There is no combination HCPCS code that you can use to bill the combination of abluterol and pulmicort inhalation treatment. Instead, you will have to bill them separately using the following HCPCS J codes:J7609 (Albuterol, inhalation solution, compounded product, administered through DME, unit dose, 1 mg) or J7610 (Albuterol, inhalation solution, compounded product, administered through DME, concentrated form, 1 mg) for every 1 mg of albuterol inhalation solution used.J7627 (Budesonide, inhalation solution, compounded product, administered through DME, unit dose form, up to 0.5 mg) for every 0.5 mg of the pulmicort inhalation solution used.
