Pulmonology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Breathing Capacity

Question: According to the Correct Coding Initiative (CCI), 94200 cannot be used with 94060. Is this correct?

New Mexico Subscriber
Answer: You may not use those codes simultaneously. Maximum breathing capacity (94200) is described as part of 94010 (spirometry). Spirometry includes graphic record, total and timed vital capacity, expiratory flow rate measurement(s), with or without maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV). Code 94060 (bronchospasm evaluation) is described as including 94010, so it includes MVV. Since MVV is included in 94010 and 94010 is included in 94060, by deduction, MVV is included in 94060.

For Medicare beneficiaries, CCI guidelines override CPT. CCI designates 94200 as a component of 94060. CPT, in defining the codes, implies a similar relationship between the two codes
