Pulmonology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

94762 Is a TechnicalCode

Question: How should I code for an overnight desaturation oximetry when it is not associated with a clinical visit? We have frequent requests for qualifying oximetries for home-care companies and doctors offices. New Mexico Subscriber Answer: Code 94762 describes noninvasive ear or pulse oximetry for O2 saturation by continuous overnight monitoring. It is a "technical" code in that it does not involve any physician-work RVUs. If you own the equipment that the patient will be using, you may bill for this service. However, if a portable diagnostic testing company delivers/retrieves the equipment to/from the patient, you are not able to report this service. Advice for You Be the Coder and Reader Questions was provided by Carol Pohlig, BSN, RN, CPC, at the University of Pennsylvania department of medicine in Philadelphia; and Anthony M. Marinelli, MD, FCCP, chairman of the American Thoracic Society's Clinical Practice Committee.
