Get an Advanced Look at Three New COPD Codes

Question: We see a lot of elderly patients in our practice, and many of them have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). I heard that the ICD-10 2024 updates include new COPD codes. Is that true?

Answer: Yes, the 2024 ICD-10 will include three new codes in the J44.- (Other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) code set, allowing for more specific reporting of “other” COPD diagnoses. Here’s what you can expect:

  • J44.8- (Other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • J44.81 (Bronchiolitis obliterans and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome)
  • J44.89 (Other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

Be aware that J44.81 will come with both some “Code first, if applicable” and “Code also, if applicable” notes to which you will want to pay attention.

Note: Until Oct. 1, 2023, you’ll have to rely on J44.9 (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, unspecified) for all the above diagnoses.
