Question: We see a lot of elderly patients in our practice, and many of them have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). I heard that the ICD-10 2024 updates include new COPD codes. Is that true? Oregon Subscriber
Answer: Yes, the 2024 ICD-10 will include three new codes in the J44.- (Other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) code set, allowing for more specific reporting of “other” COPD diagnoses. Here’s what you can expect: Be aware that J44.81 will come with both some “Code first, if applicable” and “Code also, if applicable” notes to which you will want to pay attention. Note: Until Oct. 1, 2023, you’ll have to rely on J44.9 (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, unspecified) for all the above diagnoses.
