Measure Your Supply Code Knowledge

Question: My family physician administered 2 milliliters (mL) of Decadron with 1 mL = 4 milligrams (mg). How many units should I report?

Kentucky Subscriber

Answer: The HCPCS level-two manual indicates 1 mg for Decadron Phosphate (J1100, Injection, dexamethasone sodium phosphate, 1 mg) or Decadron-LA (J1094, Injection, dexamethasone acetate, 1 mg). Because, in your situation, a 1-mL dose of Decadron contains 4 mg, for every 1 mL administered the FP delivers 4 mg of the medication. To reach the final supply used, you should multiple the number of milliliters administered (2) times the number of milligrams per milliliter (4). Consequently, you should report eight (2 ml x 4 mg = 8 mg) units of Decadron or J1100-J1094 x 8.
