How to Code Just-Released FluMist

Get ready for flu vaccines with this combo Wondering what to do about the new intranasal flu vaccine? Here's the answer: Our experts say you should code the nasal mist the same way you would report a nonintramuscular immunization.

The Food and Drug Administration recently licensed and the American Academy of Pediatrics just approved the new intranasal flu vaccine, FluMist, says Richard H. Tuck, MD, FAAP, a nationally recognized speaker on coding, compliance and reimbursement. If your family physician plans to offer FluMist, you should report her services using the following codes:
  administration - 90473, Immunization administration by intranasal or oral route; one vaccine (single or combination vaccine/toxoid)
  product - 90660, Influenza virus vaccine, live, for  intranasal use.
