Many of us are being asked to stay home right now, so what better time to brush up on your hypertension coding knowledge?

Here are three coding questions relating to the condition. Grab your pen and paper, and see if you can get a perfect score

Question 1: When your provider documents that a patient has hypertension and either heart disease or chronic kidney disease (CKD), should you automatically use one of the combination codes to code the hypertension with the other condition?

Question 2: When a patient records a blood pressure reading greater than 140/90 mm Hg, should you automatically report a hypertension code from Chapter 9 of the ICD-10?

Question 3: If your provider documents that a patient has hypertension and kidney disease, but notes that it is the kidney disease that is causing the hypertension, not the other way around, what code(s) would you use and, if you use more than one code, how would you sequence them?
