Primary Care Coding Alert

Coding Quiz:

Ace This Quiz, Avoid Contraceptive Service Coding Errors

“Context is key,” say experts.

One of the most important services primary care providers (PCPs) can provide for their female patients is contraceptive counseling and planning. But knowing what kind of evaluation and management (E/M) service to bill for them can be very tricky, as you need to take context for the service into consideration before assigning the correct code.

Coding for injectable contraceptives and/or intrauterine devices (IUDs) is also a challenge. So, we put together this quiz to test your understanding of contraceptive coding.

Question 1: What E/M code(s) would you use when a patient requests contraceptive services for pregnancy prevention, and can you bill them together, using one code for the counseling and the other for the development of a contraceptive plan?

Question 2: What E/M code(s) would you use when a patient requires contraceptive services for medical reasons?

Question 3: Can you bill injectable contraceptives and/or IUDs separately? If so, how?
