Primary Care Coding Alert

Bone Up on Influenza Types

You need to know the different types of influenza viruses, as the identification of the type of virus will change your diagnosis code in ICD-10. If your clinician identifies the virus type, you will use the J11 series of codes. If the causative influenza virus is not identified, you will have to use the J10 series of codes.

Influenza is caused by three different types of viruses, namely:

  • Influenza A;
  • Influenza B; and
  • Influenza C — This causes a very mild infection that has sometimes no significant symptoms.
