Depend on Date of Service

Question: I have some patients whose diagnoses use codes that received updates on Oct. 1. We are still treating these patients, but the codes have changed. Do I need to adjust the claims that straddled the annual code updates? Do I adjust any affected code to the updated 2022 codes?

Answer: Look to the date of service (DOS) and base your coding on whatever codes were accurate at that time. If you’re coding services from Sept. 30, 2021, you need to use the 2021 coding manual. As you continue to treat any patients through Sept. 30, 2022, use the 2022 coding manual. Make sure you’re coding and then submitting claims to insurance based on date of service.
