Question: My practice has received communications from the American Medical Association (AMA) about needing to purchase a license for the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set. Does a practice have to obtain a license to use CPT® content? AAPC Forum Participant
Answer: The AMA says, on its website, “Any individual or entity using CPT content needs permission or a license (i.e., an end-user agreement, end user license agreement, or other written agreement authorizing use of CPT codes) from the AMA or an authorized distributor.” CPT® code sets are used for claims processing, among other endeavors, and because the code sets are copyrighted by the AMA, they must be licensed for use in electronic products, etc., AMA says. Find more information on the AMA website about whether you may need to pursue licensing.
