If you're a mental health provider in Illinois, your Blue Cross Blue Shield patients have one less hurdle to jump through. The payer dropped a plan that would have required subscribers to get prior approval for a number of outpatient mental health services. Mental health professionals stated that the BCBS preauthorization requirement violated the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equality Act, which is designed to make mental health services no different than other medical services. Illinois BCBS will still have pre-authorization requirements for certain services such as behavioral health partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs at facilities, outpatient electroconvulsive therapy, and psychological and neuropsychological tes! ting, according to statements made by Dr. Scott Sarran, Illinois Blue Cross chief medical officer.
