ICD-9 and CPT Reminder:

Don't Get Caught Unprepared for New Codes

Oct. 1 and Jan. 1 are the key dates Coding changes are happening this month - and more are right around the corner. Here are the key points you should remember.

If Oct. 1 caught you unprepared for the new ICD-9 codes and code revisions for 2005, you have some fast catching up to do. Immediately familiarize yourself with the new codes and change all superbills and software systems to reflect the code changes. Without the customary 90-day grace period, you need to jump right in!

And don't forget about new CPT codes for 2005. Coding experts have already gotten a sneak peak at the upcoming code additions, deletions and revisions, but CMS will post the official list of new CPT codes and code changes on its Web site at the end of October (visit www.cms.hhs.gov to check for the new codes). CPT code changes will take effect Jan. 1 - and there's no 90-day grace period for these either.
