Repeat 11750

Question: Our podiatrist performed a partial excision of the matrix of the lateral border of the patient’s nail of the great toe, right foot. A few days later, the patient came back with an ingrown nail at the median border. Can we report 11750 twice, once for each visit?

Answer: Yes, if the second excision was unrelated to the previous excision, and not a complication of it, you can report 11750 (Excision of nail and nail matrix, partial or complete [e.g., ingrown or deformed nail], for permanent removal) twice within the 10-day global period.

Append modifier 79 (Unrelated procedure or service by the same physician or other qualified health care professional during the postoperative period) and the toe modifier (in this case, T5, Right foot, great toe).
