Plantar Fasciitis Injections

Question: What’s the correct CPT® code to report for a plantar fasciitis injection? I’m not sure whether 20550 or 20600 is correct.

Answer: Report 20550 (Injection[s]; single tendon sheath, or ligament, aponeurosis [e.g., plantar “fascia”]) for the injection. Code 20605 (Arthrocentesis, aspiration and/or injection; intermediate joint or bursa [e.g., temporomandibular, acromioclavicular, wrist, elbow or ankle, olecranon bursa]) would be appropriate for an injection into a joint or bursa, but not for an injection into the plantar fascia, a band of connective tissue that runs along the base of the foot.
