Podiatry Coding & Billing Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Are Multiple Anesthetic Injections Allowed?

Question: How many times can a patient get an injection (64455) before it is global per Medicare guidelines? Virginia Subscriber Answer: According to CPT Assistant, if the podiatrist performed the procedure for each foot, you can charge once for each side. "Code 64455 (Injection[s], anesthetic agent and/or steroid, plantar common digital nerves [e.g., Morton's neuroma]) was introduced in CPT 2009 and specifically represents injection of an anesthetic agent and/or steroidal agent into the involved plantar digital nerve interspace. Code 64455 is reported only once per foot, regardless of the number of injections provided, as is reflected in the plural forms for "injection" and "nerve."
