Grasp How to Report Unna Boot Application

Question: Which CPT® code should we use to report an Unna boot application?

California Subscriber

Answer: When the podiatrist applies an Unna boot, which it a spiral compression dressing composed of cotton and zinc oxide paste or other emollients, you should report 29580 (Strapping; Unna boot).

An Unna boot keeps the skin moist and free of irritation while applying pressure to the patient's leg. Unna boots treat venous stasis ulcers by controlling blood flow in the leg and providing a stable environment for ulcer healing. Unna boots also provide healing properties for strains and sprains.

Caution: You should never report 29580 in conjunction with 29581 (Application of multi-layer compression system; leg (below knee), including ankle and foot), according to CPT® 2018.
