Question: I just want to confirm something. At our podiatry practice (provider not facility), we scan patients for custom-molded orthotics. Can we bill for the actual scanning?

Answer: Yes, many commercial payers will reimburse you for the process of scanning for custom-molded orthotics if you are referring to fitting patients for L3000 (Foot, insert, removable, molded to patient model, ‘UCB’ type, Berkeley Shell, each). You can add the CPT® code 29799 (Unlisted procedure, casting or strapping) to the claim twice with modifiers RT (Right side) and LT (Left side) and a note in box 19 that says, “casting for custom functional foot orthotics, bilateral” to help prove medical necessity.
Remember: Keep in mind that orthotics should be billed out on the date they are dispensed to the patient.
