CMS recently published its list of the new ICD-10 2020 codes, but they won’t go into effect until Oct. 1, 2019. Dig Into Shiny, New Pressure Ulcer Codes If you report ulcers in your podiatry practice, you might recall that the last couple of years have brought new and revised codes to this category. ICD-10 2020 will be no exception, and you will gain the following new codes: These new codes will be indexed between the codes that identify stage four pressure ulcers and unspecified stage pressure ulcers. For example, look at where new code L89.616 will fall in the existing lineup of pressure ulcer codes: The new pressure ulcer codes are more specific and will better define the exact areas of the ulcerations, explains Arnold Beresh, DPM, CPC, CSFAC, in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Don’t Overlook These Enthesopathy Revisions Revisions: You’ll see some revisions to current enthesopathy codes M77.50-M77.52. All of these codes will add the word “ankle” to the descriptor. Take a look at the revisions (emphasis added): Other enthesopathy defined: “Other enthesopathy” refers to a disorder that affects the site where ligaments, tendons, or muscles attach to the joint or bone — the result of an inflammatory rheumatic or nonrheumatic disease. This code represents an enthesopathy not specifically named under any other ICD-10 codes. Clarify New Congenital Diagnoses You’ll also get these new codes to choose from when reporting congenital conditions: Don’t miss: If you look at all of the above codes, you will see that ICD-10 2020 adds a fifth character to the original fourth character base code for added specificity. For example, you currently report Q66.7 (Congenital pes cavus) for congenital pes cavus. But starting in October 2019, you will be able to specify whether the pes cavus affected an unspecified foot (Q66.70); the right foot (Q66.71); or the left foot (Q66.72). Navigate T and Z-Code Additions ICD-10 2020 will also add a few new T-codes.
