READER QUESTIONS:

1 Unit of 95920 = 1 Hour

Question: One of my physiatrists is questioning how to bill for motor evoked potential studies along with intraoperative monitoring during the surgical procedure.  How should I code this?

Answer: In 2005, CPT added two new codes for motor evoked potential studies:

• 95928--Central motor evoked potential study (transcranial motor stimulation); upper limbs

• 95929--Central motor evoked potential study (transcranial motor stimulation); lower limbs.

Additionally, you should use the add-on code +95920 (Intraoperative neurophysiology testing, per hour [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]) to bill for the time spent in intraoperative monitoring during the surgical procedure. You should report this time as 1 unit for each hour.

Keep in mind: The billed time should not include the time to perform and obtain the initial baseline study(s).
