READER QUESTIONS:

Distinquish Between 2 Pneumonia Vaccines

Question: How should I report a Pneumovax vaccine that we administered to a 9-year-old patient?

Ohio Subscriber
Answer: You should assign CPT 90732 (Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, 23-valent, adult or immunosuppressed patient dosage, for use in individuals 2 years or older, for subcutaneous or intramuscular use) with V03.82 (Streptococcus pneumoniae [pneumococcus]). Children over age 2 who are at high-risk may receive the Pneumovax vaccine.

Children under 2 should routinely receive Prevnar, the 7 conjugate vaccine. Report this vaccine with 90669 (Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, polyvalent, for children under 5 years, for intramuscular use) and V03.82.

Remember also to code the vaccine administration with 90471-90472 (Immunization administration [includes percutaneous, intradermal, subcutaneous, or intra-muscular injections] ...).
