Reader Question:

New Vaccine Administration Codes

Question: I have heard there are new vaccine administration codes. What are they?
Texas Subscriber     Answer: New and revised vaccine administration codes will be in CPT 2002 and have been approved for early release. The codes, listed as follows, can be used on July 1 (early release facilitates commercial payers' loading the codes into their computer systems):
90471 -- immunization administration (includes percutaneous, intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and jet injections); one vaccine (single or combination vaccine/toxoid)
+90472 -- ... each additional vaccine (single or combination vaccine/toxoid) (list separately in addition to code for primary procedure) (use 90472 in conjunction with code 90471)
+90473 -- immunization administration by intranasal or oral route; one vaccine (single or combination vaccine/toxoid)
+90474 -- ... each additional vaccine (single or combination vaccine/toxoid) (list separately in addition to code for primary procedure) (use 90474 in conjunction with code 90473).   Code 90471 is revised, 90473 and 90474 are new and 90472 is unchanged.
