Reader Question:

Don't Use Units With Allergy Injections

Question: For multiple allergy injections in which the patient brings in the serum, I report 95117 times the number of shots the nurse administers. Insurers keep denying the units. Should I appeal the denials?

Idaho Subscriber Answer: In this case, the payer is right. You should report 95117 (Professional services for allergen immunotherapy not including provision of allergenic extracts; two or more injections) for multiple injections, not for each additional injection. The code's descriptor states "two or more injections" - plural.
