Dont Forget Aphasia Diagnosis

Question: Which ICD9 Code should I use for Landau-Kleffner syndrome?

Vermont Subscriber

Answer: Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), also called acquired epileptiform aphasia, is a rare childhood neurological disorder characterized by the sudden or gradual development of aphasia (loss of language) and an abnormal electro-encephalogram (EEG).

Because no ICD-9 code describes the specific syndrome, you should use the general aphasia diagnosis of 784.3 (Symptoms involving head and neck; aphasia).
