Reader Question:

Coding for the Bili Chek

Question: How should I bill for the new transcutaneous bilirubin machine?

Arizona Subscriber

Answer: Report the Bili Chek, popular among parents and infants because there are no needles, with 88400 (Bilirubin, total, transcutaneous). However, not all managed care companies pay for it. Practices are ethically recouping the costs in office visits. If a baby goes home within 48 hours of delivery, many pediatricians want to check the baby for jaundice. Use 774.6 (Unspecified fetal and neonatal jaundice) for the office visit (99211-99215).
