Reader Question:

Billing for Prescription Writing

Question: Writing triplicate prescriptions for Ritalin takes a lot of time. Can you suggest appropriate coding that would cover this service?

Georgia Subscriber
Answer: Writing prescriptions is part of the office visit. Some states by law require triplicate prescriptions. The only way to be paid for the time involved is to have the office visit (99212-99215) with the patient or the mother. Copayments apply to these visits.
