News Brief:

Two New Administration Codes for 2002 Can Be Used Now

In an early release of 2002 codes, the AMA has announced two new vaccine administration codes: 90473 (immunization administration by intranasal or oral route; one vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid]) and CPT 90474 (immunization administration by intranasal or oral route; each additional vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid] [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]).

According to the February 2001, CPT Assistant, the codes have been approved for early release for reporting use effective Jan. 1, 2001, and should be used in place of 90471 (immunization administration [includes percutaneous, intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular and jet injections]; one vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid]) and 90472 (...each additional vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid][list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]) for oral or intranasal routes of administration.
