In the October 2004 Pediatric Coding Alert article "Becoming an Expert Diabetes Coder: We'll Show You How to Develop Your Staff's 250.xx Skills," readers proved to be the experts in catching a typo in example one.
The example described an encounter with a patient whose diabetes is well-controlled. The answer stated that because the pediatrician notes the patient's diabetes is controlled, you should "submit type I, uncontrolled with a fifth-digit subclassification of 3." The article should have recommended that you report type I, not stated as uncontrolled with a fifth-digit subclassification of "1" (Diabetes mellitus without mention of complication; type I [juvenile type], not stated as uncontrolled), instead of "3" (... type I [juvenile type], uncontrolled). Therefore, the correct answer should have been 250.01, not 250.03.
