Pediatric Coding Alert

Correction:

Put V Codes in Primary Place for Preoperative Examinations

In the June 2002 Pediatric Coding Alert ("How to Modify a Diagnosis With a V Code"), the first paragraph of the section "preoperative examinations" on page 44 should have read: The V codes for preoperative examinations (V72.81, Pre-operative cardiovascular examination; V72.82, Pre-operative respiratory examination; V72.83 , Other specified pre-operative examination; and V72.84, Pre-operative examination, unspecified) should be used in the primary position with the reason for the surgery in the secondary position, Holle says. The exception is when the child has a risk factor, in which case that diagnosis should be in the primary position. The editors of Pediatric Coding Alert apologize for the error and extend a special thanks to those readers who pointed it out.
