Pediatric Coding Alert

Correction:

Outpatient Consultation Codes for Observation Unit

In the December 2001 issue of Pediatric Coding Alert on page 96, in a reader question on coding for preoperative exams in an observation unit, we incorrectly used "inpatient" when we should have said outpatient. We recommended using consultation codes CPT 99241 -99245, which is correct. Then, however, we said, "Because the child has not been admitted, use the inpatient codes." The sentence should read, "Because the child has not been admitted, use the outpatient codes."
