Pediatric Coding Alert

Clarification

In the May issue of Pediatric Coding Alert, we discussed the use of prolonged services codes when treating ADHD patients. Irwin J. Kash, MD, of Lee Physician Group in Fort Myers, FL, wrote to remind us that the prolonged services codes are for use in addition to the E/M services code that is appropriate.

For example, you might use 99213 for the office visit, 99354 for the first hour of prolonged services, and 99355 for each subsequent half hour. In the article, which focused on different ways to get reimbursed for treating ADHD patients, we did not mention the tack-on nature of the prolonged services codes. We regret any confusion this might have caused.
