Pathology/Lab Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Autologous Plateletgel Therapy

Question: We are looking for the specific CPT and HCFA insurance and Medicare billing codes for autologous plateletgel therapy applications in wound care, dental, nursing homes and physicians offices.

Shirley A. Abshier
Allied Hemotechnology, Davie, Fla.

Answer: There is no specific code for collection and processing of platelets for plateletgel. This method of wound closure that is growing in popularity may be considered investigational by some payers. Code G0168 applies to wound closures using adhesives only. If this code is used, all costs associated with preparing the adhesive should be considered part of the service covered by the HCPCS.
