Reader Question:

Don't Miss HIPAA 5010 Reprieve

Question: I heard that there's been another delay for HIPAA 5010 enforcement. Is that true, and if so, what's the new deadline?

Answer: Yes, CMS announced on March 15 that they planned to delay the April 1 deadline for 5010 enforcement until June 30.

Providers and other claims submitters "have been making steady progress," CMS said in its announcement. "The Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) program is currently reporting successful receipt and processing of over 70 percent of all Part A claims and over 90 percent of all Part B claims in the Version 5010 format."

But some technical glitches are still plaguing the new format. "There are still a number of outstanding issues and challenges impeding full implementation," CMS admits. CMS's Office of E-Health Standards and Services "believes that these remaining issues warrant an extension of enforcement discretion to ensure that all entities can complete the transition."

Why it matters: Version 5010 lays out the technical electronic standards mandated for HIPAA transactions -- that includes claims, eligibility inquiries, remittance advice, and payment data using ICD-10. Either directly or indirectly, HIPAA Version 5010 will impact nearly everyone involved in healthcare transactions -- providers, clearinghouses, and payers, as well as vendors who provide practice management (PM) systems and other transaction-related software(s).
