In the fall, ED coders will have some new ICD-9 codes to get used to, as the 2008 version of ICD-9 will take effect on Oct. 1.

ED coders: You-ll want to stay ahead of the curve, so take note of the following ICD-9 codes, slated to take effect this autumn:

- 255.41--Glucocorticoid deficiency
- 255.42--Mineralocorticoid deficiency
- 288.66--Bandemia
- 359.24--Drug-induced myotonia
- 423.3--Cardiac tamponade
- 449--Septic arterial embolism
- 787.20--Dysphagia, unspecified
- V12.53--Personal history of sudden cardiac arrest
- V12.54--Personal history of transient ischemic attack (TIA), and cerebral infarction without residual deficits
-  V17.41--Family history of sudden cardiac death (SCD).

Note: The final addendum providing complete information on changes to the diagnosis codes in ICD-9-CM will be posted by early June on the CDC Web page at www.cdc.gov/nchs/icd9.htm. There may be additional codes on this list that are added at the final 2007 ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting.
