It's up to providers to prove once and for all that E/M doesn't stand for "extravagant and misplaced."
The American Health Information Management Association and the American Hospital Association have formed a panel to sort out the evaluation and management tangle once and for all. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services called for providers to propose new codes for facilities to report the E/M services that physicians provide in them.
The panel will review processes that facilities have used to meet current Medicare requirements as well as other E/M models that might make it easier to code emergency and clinical services. Its recommendations will be ready by April 2003.
