Some providers have complained that carriers have been denying the new codes for removal or replacement of central venous access devices (36580-36590). Consultant Melody Mulaik with Coding Strategies in Powder Springs, Ga., says this is most likely a result of the carriers taking an extra month to bring their systems up to speed on the new codes. "Some payers just couldn't get updated quickly enough, so Medicare gave them a 30-day grace period," Mulaik speculates.
