Reader Question:

Turn to T19 Family for Stent Removal

Question: What ICD-10 code should I report for the urologist’s work removing a stent?

Massachusetts Subscriber

Answer: You should report an ICD-10 code from the T19 family, such as T19.1XXA (Foreign body in bladder, initial encounter), for the removal of a ureteral stent. You’ll use CPT® code 52310 (Cystourethroscopy, with removal of foreign body, calculus, or ureteral stent from urethra or bladder [separate procedure]; simple).

Old way: Under ICD-9, you would have submitted 939.0 (Foreign body in bladder and urethra).
