Otolaryngology Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Reserve 31579 for More Than Video Making

Question: What code should we use for videostroboscopy?

South Dakota Subscriber

Answer: CPT does not contain a code that specifically denotes -videostroboscopy.- You should use 31579 (Laryngoscopy, flexible or rigid fiberoptic, with stroboscopy) for a laryngoscopy using equipment that flashes a strobe light with diagnosis 784.40 (Voice disturbance, unspecified). The otolaryngologist has the patient make sounds so the vocal cords will move and appear to be in slow motion while being examined.

Code 31579 contains no technical or professional component. The procedure is complete at the point that the physician removes the scope.

Reserve 31579 for videostroboscopy with a rigid or flexible scope. Do not use the code for simply making and viewing a video of the procedure.
